Where cafe and restaurant managers are employed

Cafe and restaurant managers work in large hotels, hospitals, schools, catering firms, department stores and other retail outlets. They also work in industrial and defence centre canteens, restaurants, licensed clubs and casinos. Self-employment is possible.

Positions tend to be filled by promoting an experienced person from within the organisation. People who intend to run their own business are advised to gain experience, both on-the-job and by studying an appropriate course.

Pay

Full-time cafe and restaurant managers in South Australia generally earn less than $600 per week.

In 2011 there were 2,298 people employed full-time as cafe and restaurant managers in South Australia compared with 2,168 in 2006.

How to become one

You can work as a cafe and restaurant manager without formal qualifications. Entry to this occupation may be improved if you have qualifications. You may like to consider a vocational education and training vocational education and training (VET) qualification in catering operations. You may need to be 18 years or older to study some subjects. As subjects and prerequisites can vary between institutions, you should contact your chosen institution for further information.
