Upskill or reskill your workforce through Skills in the Workplace.  Workforce planning will help you work out which of your employees need training and what training they need.

What is workforce planning?

Workforce planning helps you think about skills you’ll need to grow your business: how to find people with skills and, if you already have them in your business, how to keep them.

How good is your workforce planning?

Assess your current level of workforce planning by answering these questions:

  • Are you aware of the challenges facing your company as a result of South Australia’s population getting older?
  • Do you know what skills are likely to be needed in the future – and what skills are already scarce?
  • Can you quickly call up information that tells you the average age of your workforce – and how that average has changed in the last five years?
  • Do you know what your employees’ retirement intentions are? And do you have a succession planning strategy?
  • Do you know how far your present workers are travelling to reach your workplace? And do you know if that distance has increased over the last five years?
  • Do you have a strategy to ensure that you have a sufficient supply of skilled employees to meet your demand over the next five years?
  • Do you have workers with overseas qualifications?

If you answered ‘no’ to most of these questions, you probably need to do some workforce planning. If you answered ‘yes’ to most of these questions, then you may be doing some workforce planning already – and should be considering these workforce strategies:

  • recruiting and training new staff
  • recognising and utilising the skills of your current workforce
  • working with education and training providers to skill existing workers
  • recruiting apprentices and trainees
  • having your overseas workers assessed for qualifications or skills that may have gone unrecognised.
