Retraining Horses and Greyhounds to New Environments project

This project will look at the skills required to assess, retrain and rehome horses and greyhounds after their racing careers have finished.

To ensure a high quality of animal welfare for horses transitioning from racing to retirement, the industry has developed procedures requiring owners and trainers to report on the retirement of horses. Greyhound racing authorities aim to advance animal welfare standards through programs that facilitate rehoming of greyhounds into new environments.

Greyhound Health Assistance project

Complementary therapies can be based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignment of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, known to affect the nerves, muscles and organs.

This project will explore and identify the skills and knowledge requirements of providers administering therapy practices such as massage and first-aid to greyhounds and canines.

Racehorse Breeding Skills project

Australian horse racing is reliant on the breeding of high quality horses including foaling down, nutrition, development of the foal, knowledge of pedigrees, business management and relevant rules and regulations.

Thoroughbred breeders currently send workers to the UK and Ireland to undertake Diploma-level qualifications. The skill needs of horse racing and breeding should be addressed to protect current local and export sales revenue.
