Auctioneers are mainly involved with selling properties at auction. They also assist, inform and represent farmers in business transactions such as buying and selling of livestock and rural property goods and services.
Where auctioneers are employed
Auctioneers work for auctioneering firms, valuers, real estate agents and stock agents. Some work alone or in partnership as consultants. Many people gain experience as an auctioneer's clerk before becoming an auctioneer.
Employment opportunities for auctioneers may change during periods of economic growth, although work is still available during periods of low growth particularly when firms and individuals become insolvent and have to sell their assets to pay off debts. There is also a shift within the industry towards greater use of online auctions.
Full-time auctioneers in South Australia generally earn more than $1,600 per week.
In 2011 there were 40 people employed full time as auctioneers in South Australia compared with 38 people in 2006.
How to become one
You can work as an auctioneer without formal qualifications. You will probably get some informal training on-the-job. However training and experience in real estate may be advantageous in accessing employment and training opportunities. The Auctioneers and Valuers Association of Australia offers courses in auctioneering and valuation practice.
Auctioneers of goods do not need a licence. However business and property auctioneers must be registered with Consumer and Business Services. To qualify for registration as an auctioneer you must first be a registered land agent or real estate sales representative. Auctioneers of dangerous or sensitive goods such as firearms or live animals may require additional licences.
