A small business owner runs a small business that includes all aspects of business management from set up, financial planning, marketing and team leadership. In Australia the definition of 'small' is defined as a business employing less than 20 people.

Where small business owners are employed

Some have a shop front or a site where you can see them in operation, while others operate from home or from their car.

How to become one

Before you get started, find out if people are interested in buying your products or services. Find out who your competitors are and whether the market can sustain your business. Conduct some research to see whether your idea is really feasible. This will involve gathering, analysing and evaluating information to help you formulate your business plan. You will then need to find out the legal and taxation requirements, how to register the business, how to get a business loan and how to manage the finances.
