Employing an apprentice can add real value to your business

The South Australian Government’s Skills for Business package is now offering businesses across the state extra support to train and build a skilled, sustainable workforce for our future growth.

The Skills for Business package is in addition to businesses having access to hundreds of apprenticeship and traineeship qualifications on the Subsidised Training List.

What's available?

The Skills for Business package is now offering businesses across South Australia extra support to continue skills training, with the following support options available:

  1. Group Training Boost – making it easier to employ an apprentice with up to $5200 off the charge out rate when you host a new apprentice or trainee through your Group Training Organisation (GTO).
  2. Equipped for Growth - up to $5000 small business boost when you hire an apprentice
  3. Equipped for Work – up to $1000 reimbursed for equipment and services when you hire an apprentice
  4. Equipped for Training – a Travel and Accommodation Allowance contributing to the cost for your apprentice’s off-the job training.

Equipped for Training Travel and Accommodation Allowance

If your business is in rural or regional South Australia, you can access allowances for travel and accommodation associated with hiring an apprentice or trainee.

Many modern awards require employers to reimburse apprentices for all costs associated with attending off-the-job training.

Even if it’s not specified in the award, responsible employers will ensure that their apprentice is fully supported and is not out of pocket as a result of having to travel to attend off-the-job training.

This allowance is a contribution only and is not intended to cover the total travel and accommodation costs.

If the round trip from your apprentice’s home to the nearest training location is more than 150km, you’re likely to be eligible.

Before applying for the allowance, read the guidelines and check attendance requirements outlined by the training provider.

If you're already receiving the Travel Allowance, you can use update details or upload an amended call up notice using this online form.
