Carpenters and joiners

Carpenters and joiners construct, erect, install, renovate and repair structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, wallboard and other materials, and cut, shape and fit timber parts to form structures and fittings.

What do carpenters and joiners do?

  • study drawings and specifications to determine required materials, dimensions and installation procedures
  • order and select timbers and materials, and prepare layouts
  • erect framework and roof framing, lay sub-flooring and floorboards and verify trueness of structures
  • cut wood joints. nail fascia panels, sheath roofs, and fit exterior wall cladding and door and window frames
  • assemble prepared wood to form structures and fittings ready to install
  • may construct concrete formwork or work with plastic laminates, perspex and metals
