What do deck and fishing hands do?

  • handle and operate ropes, wires, mooring equipment, lines, running gear and bait
  • stand lookout, adjust the ship's course as directed and patrol ship to ensure safety of the vessel, cargo and passengers
  • assist with cargo operations
  • perform routine maintenance and checks
  • attach gear and fasten towing cables to nets, cast and lower nets, pots, lines and traps into water
  • haul in fishing gear, remove fish and other marine life and sort, clean, preserve, stow and refrigerate catch
