Dental assistants prepare patients for dental examination and assist dentists, hygienists and therapists in providing care and treatment.

What do dental assistants do?

  • receive and prepare patients, and advise on dental health and care
  • arrange and hand instruments and medication to dentists
  • prepare dental materials and process X-rays
  • use suction devices and water sprays
  • perform routine maintenance, sterilise and prevent cross infection of equipment
  • may act as receptionist and perform billing and other clerical tasks
